‘Bluebeard’s Castle’ with the Canadian Opera Company

This spring, Christian Van Horn returns to the Canadian Opera Company, singing the title role in Bartók’s Bluebeard’s Castle, reprising his “chilling” and “potent” (Operawire) portrayal. Van Horn is an acclaimed interpreter of the role, with Opera Today saying, “His generous, resounding bass-baritone was a perfect fit for the extreme vocal demands of the title role. His superbly colored vocalizing ran the gamut from anguished deflection to treacherous manipulation to lethal domination.  Mr. Van Horn’s powerful delivery could shake the rafters one minute and scale back to an intense whisper that commands our sympathy the next.”

Singing under the baton of Johannes Debus, Van Horn will appear in Robert LePage’s production alongside mezzo-soprano Karen Cargill as Judith. Bluebeard’s Castle will be performed as a double-bill with Schoenberg’s Erwartung, sung by Anna Gabler.

Bluebeard’s Castle and Erwartung will play April 25-May 16.
